When we regularly practice self-criticism, we're engaging with our body's threat defense system. This aspect of our reptilian brain is the quickest and most easily triggered when experiencing a threat. This means that self-criticism is our go-to when things go wrong. Our fight-flight-freeze response works well for protecting against physical threats, but nowadays, most of the threats we encounter are challenges to our challenges to our self-perception and identity.

Cultivating self-worth and self-compassion, along with using other science-backed tools, we can move from the stress response to a more nurturing and restful response. By activating our parasympathetic, these tools provide us with a sense of safety and give us the ability to respond.
